Be The Change

Be The Change

You are who you are waiting for.

You Must Be the Change You Wish to See in the World

The Be The Change workshop is for you if you know you are a world changer.  If you know you have some purpose to fulfill in this life.

Ghandi famously said, "You must be the change you wish to see in this world."

I started living that as my personal mantra in 1995, and in the 20 years since then, my understanding of this idea has deepened and deepened.

You know that you have enormous potential in you!  You can feel it!  Every so often you get an inkling of its presence… or you see some evidence that lights your heart up.

But maybe sometimes you get tripped up by life, by circumstances, by your own habits, by people around you, and you stumble off your path.

The BE THE CHANGE workshop is designed to reveal to you THE EASIEST PATH to your most magnificent offering!

Since this workshop is focused on very special individuals who are committed to making big changes in the world, it's a year long, and it requires a deep commitment on my part, so I only invite a very few people to join it.   If you want to explore it with me, write to me at support@thrivinginpractice.com, and introduce yourself!  I am really looking forward to hearing about your vision!

Everything created by humans starts with an idea.  The space program, orchestras, fajitas, dog parks.  Everything.  And I know you have some fantastic ideas that you want to see become reality.

I want you to know that I know that you have the potential within you to make your visions a reality.  And I am committed to helping you do that.

  • This program is a year long, because big commitments can take some time.
  • It gives us enough time for you to fumble and recover, so I can help you learn more skillful ways of dealing with the difficult moments.
  • It also allows us the space to let your dream adapt and evolve as you develop confidence.  Often at the end of the year, participants' goals have grown FAR beyond where they started!
  • And a year gives me enough time to really get to know you and for us to develop a relationship based in enough trust that we can get past the layers of habits and identity that have been holding you back... and find the you that is longing to emerge.
"Mary's great gift as a coach and healer is to make people feel seen and heard without feeling judged. This is harder than it sounds. We bring our most vulnerable self into this work, and the merest hint of disapproval can shut us down.   But big work also requires change, and Mary doesn't just affirm, affirm, affirm. She gently and kindly guides you to other possibilities.  She's amazing when it comes to contacting something painful and staying there with you, showing you that you can actually move through these difficulties. Then, by listening closely, she figures out steps toward healthy change and suggests them in a spirit of optimism, reassuring you that she'll be there on the way.  I've worked with a lot of healers, and I know how rare is her ability to make a client feel supported, safe and loved."

Imagine if a year from now you could...

  • Have your work life transformed or maybe be in a whole new career.
  • Found peace in your life.
  • Have created that organization you know can serve the world in the ways only you can.
  • Have successfully launched that socially conscious business you’ve been wanting to start for years.

Well you can!  And if you join this program and stick with it, you will!

You are who you are waiting for.

You are the change the world is waiting for.

Be the Change you wish to see in your life and in the world!

This training program grew out of many years moving slowly in this direction.  I am a slow learner.  But maybe that’s good.  It certainly has given me an opportunity to understand a lot about the obstacles people face.

A profound event happened to me around 1998. I had been leading a Peace Circle, inviting people into my home once a week to explore together ways that we could contribute to peace. I had the privilege of working directly with Marianne Williamson and other great leaders as we worked to develop a nationwide network of Peace Circles and to create a cabinet level Department of Peace.

A lot of amazing things happened — we got sponsors for the bill in congress; one of the members of our circle found the strength to leave the corporate job she had hated for years and moved to Dublin where she foundeda rebirthing center; another moved to Israel to do peace and reconciliation work; a third created a peace nonprofit and moved to Amsterdam to build the organization — and so I could see that my work was having some effect.  But I still felt unsure about whether what I was doing made any significant difference.  My real focus and commitment was the creation of peace — in myself and in the world — and I thought, "maybe it's just a kind of arrogance to think I that what I do matters so much.”

For several years by that point, I had been trying very hard to live by Gandhi's words, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”  I had the quote up over my workspace, I thought about it constantly and tried to let it guide my decision making.  But as I continued to do the day to day work, I kept learning more and more about the challenges the world was facing, and I thought, "Maybe me 'being the change' is such a small drop in the bucket it’s just not really worth anything."

One cold winter day I was walking outside —  I remember I was wearing my big old army surplus greatcoat that I wore through college and beyond.  I was walking down the street wondering about these questions that were plaguing me:  Is anything I do enough?  Am I fooling myself?  Is this just self-importance?  Is the world beyond help?  I put my hands in my pockets to keep them warm, and I felt something in my right pocket that I didn’t recognize.  I pulled it out and saw it was a slip of paper rolled up.  I unrolled it and read these words...

"Everything you do will seem insignificant,

and it is vitally important that you do it.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Time stopped for me, and I forgot to breathe for a few moments.  I had no idea how this piece of paper made its way into my pocket, but there it was.  As I read it, I felt the ground shift under me, as if the whole universe moved to support me.  I had been trying to “Be the Change” for years, but I had never read the whole quote before.  I had no idea Ghandi had said this first part.

And in this moment they were precisely the words I needed to hear.  The words I needed keep me going on this path I had dedicated my life to.

I still have this slip of paper.  Finding it gave me two important gifts.

  •  It helped me believe that my little contribution was important.
  •  And it showed me again the way life offers us support — that marvelous synchronicity that life uses to affirm that we are on the right path.

I didn't understand it then, but since then I have learned about the powerful ways our conscious intent intersects with the world around us to bring us into contact with exactly the resources we need.

Since that day, walking my right path has continued to lead me in many unexpected and wonderful directions, and now it includes helping you know you are on your right path and supporting you in the Being the Change You Wish to See in the World.

  • What is your vision?
  • What is the best version of your life?
  • What would make you feel the happiest and most empowered that you can imagine?

Imagine if you had support to focus more energy on clarifying, supporting and creating your vision?

Join me as we build the Beloved Community the Reverend Martin Luther King described when he said.

Our goal is to create a beloved community and
this will require a qualitative change in our souls
as well as a quantitative change in our lives.

Let the Change you wish to see in your life...

and the Change you wish to see in the world...

be supported by a brilliant community of dedicated individuals!

There's a great story about the value of the little things we can do.  I don't know if it's true, but I heard it told as a true story:

Gorbachev was interviewed and asked who had most inspired him to be able to accomplish all he did.  His answer was Dr. Martin Luther King.  Apparently Dr. King was asked the same question, and his answer was Rosa Parks. And apparently Rosa Parks too was asked the question.  When she answered, she said it was her second grade teacher.  This teacher had taught her how to stand up for herself and to tell the truth, not through words, but through the quiet example of her own integrity.  All those years later on that bus, Rosa Parks felt her second-grade teacher present beside her and was supported by her in that moment.

When I read that story, I realized that although I will never be Gorbachev, or a Dr. King or a Rosa Parks, I can for sure be like Rosa Parks' second grade teacher.  We have no idea of of the power of what we do, and here’s an important piece of information:   Small things done with great integrity create a foundation that is unshakable.

The Be The Change course will support you in discovering more about your own highest and most joyful path.  It will support you in implementing the changes that allow you to be the best you can be.  It will help you integrate well-being for yourself and well-being for the world.  It will support you in learning to use your unique skills to bring happiness to yourself and others.

The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.

A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no one could have dreamed would have come their way.

Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.

Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.

Begin it now!
